I have received correspondence from many constituents about the mound in Weedon. As is well known the mound was found to contain unexploded grenades and asbestos.
When the council approached me regarding this issue I made representations to the Ministry of Defence, who once owned this land, asking what can be done to assist the council in removing the contaminants. The Ministry informed me that the land was sold "as seen" to the council who were aware of the asbestos in 1978. They further informed me that as with anyone who discovers unexploded ordinance the MoD will dispose of this free of charge.
I fully intend to support the Parish Council where possible by continuing to make representations on their behalf to relevant authorities, as I have been doing over the last year. It is however important that I am upfront about what falls within my remit, and this situation is outside my jurisdiction, considerably limiting the action I can take. Furthermore, the MoD have made their position very clear.
I of course understand that this is an extremely important issue and will be happy to support the council in whatever action they take to address it.
