Two apprentice carpenters and a foundation degree student at the David Wilson Homes development in Mulberry Gardens in Moulton were visited by their MP as part of National Apprentice Week. Chris Heaton-Harris took a tour of Mulberry Gardens in Moulton, which when complete will provide 32 three and four bedroom quality homes, with local apprentice carpenters Adam Cox and Luke McDonald, as well as Foundation Degree student Daniel Jackson.
They gave Mr Heaton-Harris a taste of life on a building site to help demonstrate how development projects lead to training opportunities for local young people.
Mr Heaton-Harris said: “This was a great opportunity to listen to workers of varying experience in the housing industry, and also to learn about the latest advances in building new homes. David Wilson Homes’ apprentices are learning the skills that we need to help Moulton grow.”
Thanks to recent growth in the home building industry, David Wilson Homes South Midlands is looking to employ at least 10 new apprentices by September of this year, as part of a national drive to take on an extra 1,000 trainees over the next three years.
Adam Cox, 18, an apprentice carpenter from Northampton studying an NVQ Level 3 in Carpentry and Joinery at Moulton College, said: “It’s great to be learning a skilled trade, people will always need carpenters, so hopefully I’ll be able to build a life-long career out of this.”
Chris Hatfield, managing director for David Wilson Homes South Midlands, added: “We endeavour to recruit trade apprentices at all our developments and strongly believe that our role isn’t just to build new homes but to provide employment and establish strong communities too.”
